Mu and Delta Opioid Receptors Diverge

Contrary to current models, Scherrer et al. (2009) provide evidence that mu and delta opioid receptors are not expressed by the same pain-sensing neurons. In mice, agonists for these receptors produce analgesia restricted to either noxious heat or mechanical stimuli, implying that the receptors act on distinct fibers to mediate completely different types of pain relief.

The Light Touch of Delta Opioid Receptors

Expression of δ-opioid receptors in sensory neurons is controversial. In this issue of Neuron, Bardoni et al. (2014) present evidence that DOPrs are expressed on mechanosensory neurons involved in detecting nonnoxious touch but are very sparse in μ-opioid receptor-rich nociceptive neurons.

Role of delivery and trafficking of delta-opioid peptide receptors in opioid analgesia and tolerance.

Changes in the number of receptors on the cell surface lead to modulations of physiological functions and pharmacological responses of neurons. Recent studies show that delta-opioid peptide (DOP) and mu-opioid peptide (MOP) receptors have distinct subcellular localizations in neurons. In nociceptive small neurons in the dorsal root ganglia, DOP receptors are sorted into neuropeptide-containing ...

Delta Opioid Receptors: The Link between Exercise and Cardioprotection

This study investigated the role of opioid receptor (OR) subtypes as a mechanism by which endurance exercise promotes cardioprotection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Wistar rats were randomly divided into one of seven experimental groups: 1) control; 2) exercise-trained; 3) exercise-trained plus a non-selective OR antagonist; 4) control sham; 5) exercise-trained plus a kap...

Proxisome prolifrator-activated receptors alpha and delta in diabetic cardiomyopathy

Peraxisome prolifrator-activated receptors (PPARs) are a group of nuclear receptors comprising three isoforms termed alpha, beta/delta and gamma. PPARs can modulate metabolic processes especially fatty acid (FA) metabolisms via exerting transcriptional control on activating genes involved in fuel utilization. Thus, they can exert positive role in controlling chronic diseases such as diabetes. A...
